Kelaghayi is a square-shaped women’s headscarf woven from silk threads. In the western regions of Azerbaijan, it is also called a “charqat.” The production of kelaghayi has been known in Azerbaijan since ancient times.

Black Buta

The border (yelani) of the kelaghayi, and sometimes its center (khoncha), was decorated using the block-printing technique with geometric and floral patterns. Kelaghayis from different weaving centers were distinguished from one another by the ornaments on their borders.

Kelaghayis, which are widespread among the peoples of the Near East and the Caucasus, vary in size and color. Typically, older women wear dark, large-sized kelaghayis, while younger women cover themselves with small-sized kelaghayis in white or bright colors.

Nightingale

Kelaghayis featuring Oriental motifs with bordered designs, created using the block-printing technique, have gained fame even beyond our country’s borders. Among the Shaki and Basqal kelaghayis, patterns such as “Shah buta,” “Saya buta,” and “Khırda buta” are most commonly used. Multicolored kelaghayis named “Heyrati,” “Soğani,” “Istiotu,” “Albukhari,” “Abi,” and “Yelani” have also achieved great renown.

Red Pomegranate

It is worth noting that various natural pigments are used in kelaghayi production. Dyes are made from different plant species, including sumac, cornel, bitter orange, quince, saffron, black currant, and others.
